Seasonal Cutbacks FAQs
When should I cut back perennials in autumn?
Most herbaceous perennials in Derby gardens get cut back after the first proper frosts have blackened the foliage, usually mid-October to late November. Some, like sedums and ornamental grasses, look better left standing through winter for structure and wildlife.
What plants should I prune in winter?
Roses, fruit trees, deciduous shrubs and wisteria are all best pruned while dormant in winter. Spring-flowering shrubs should wait until after they have flowered.
Should I leave seed heads for wildlife?
Yes, where it suits the look of the border. We are happy to leave selected seed heads and grasses standing through winter for birds and structure, and tidy them up in early spring.
